These photos were taken on a camping trip at the Green River Reservoir in Hyde Park, Vermont, in July of 2009. Duncan and Wilson are the 'camping in the rain filth' models. It rained most of the time, and was foggy and dark the rest of the time so the loons were a bit of a challenge. . . fortunately they are completely unafraid of people, kayaks, and cameras. It was a challenge keeping equipment dry; many of these were shot in the rain. On the plus side, I didn't set myself completely on fire like I did in 2008. Once again, though, my cell phone did go in the lake. Two for two on that score. . .

As part of First Night Burlington 2009, the VYO performed two shows at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. The photos in this gallery are from the 4:30 performance; because of strict First Night Burlington policies against photography at their events, I shot only Duncan's solos, including stills at the 4:30pm performance and a video of the the 12N performance (both with permission). My apologies to other VYO performers; whenever possible at any performing arts event I try to photograph a good sampling of all performers. That wasn't the goal here, and I did not request permission to document the whole performance--only Duncan's solo.

The varied program had something for everyone, including the world premiere of "Midnight Unfolding", composed by Zach Sheets of the Vermont MIDI Project.

The music Duncan performed was the "Stars on the Hill Group", a set of traditional Cape Breton fiddle tunes arranged for orchestra and solo fiddle by Scott Macmillan with Dan R. MacDonald, and John Morris Rankin. Both performances were to packed houses, and both received standing ovations. The arrangement was originally done for, and performed by, Natalie MacMaster with Symphony Nova Scotia. We thank Scojen Music Productions and Publishing Ltd., and particularly Jennyfer Brickenden, for their cooperation in providing charts and full orchestral score to the Vermont Youth Orchestra for this performance.

Making a Difference
Peace One Day

The 5th - 8th graders at Williston Central School mustered for some human art on Peace Day, September 22, 2009. Very cool, kids. We thought it would be nice to give them some aerial photos. . .since Rocky's son Matt and his buddies were part of the peaceful (and surprisingly well organized, at least from 500' up) tribe. Mitchell I think I could see you, BTW. Jacob, you also.

Thanks to Aron Merrill for organizing this, if that is who it was.

The garish photoshop versions I did as screensavers for kids who arent old enough to remember the '60's but wish they were, and of course for us kids who were (Cindy?).

Oh, and the flags. . .the yellow flags arranged in a peace sign are a local Williston fixture, present since the early days of the war in Iraq. There's one flag for every US serviceman or woman who has died there. The photos don't belong here but I couldn't resist the irony. . .

"An Acoustic Evening"

The Brick Church Music Series concert on April 17 featured Atlantic Crossing, a terrific touring celtic and roots music group based here in Vermont. We were also fortunate to have 5 young dancers from the Heather Morris School of Dance open the show. Bill Skiff of Williston was the emcee.

The concert was hosted by the Williston/Richmond Rotary, with all funds raised going toward the Rotary International Polio Plus program to vaccinate children in the developing world against polio.

We were also pleased to have the fantastic St. George artist Sean Dye show his work before the show and during the intermission.

The event was very generously supported by RehabGym, Evergreen Family Health, and the Vermont Womens Wellness Center. All of the Brick Church Music Series concerts are generously supported by the Williston Observer, AdAstra Recording Studios, and the Town of Williston.

A world premiere of "Champlain's Voyage" by Troy Peters, along with works by Gabriel Fauré, Johannes Brahms, Georges Bizet and George Gershwin.

The photos include a large number of 'full orhestra' shots - -that was one of the things LisaMarie said she needed. I'm sorry I didnt get a 'full orchestra plus chorus' shot from the balcony--I rushed upstairs just as I realized we wouldnt see them together in the second half of the program, but I got there in time for just the bows and applause.

The Hermance Prize winner was Sammy Angstman, and that is Dr. Hermance himself awarding the prize to Sammy.

Prints can be ordered at cost (about $2 for an 8"x10") right from this site --just click on the thumbnail photo to open a large version, then move your cursor to the upper LH corner of the large version and an ordering menu will open up. The watermark won't appear on the print. VYOA staff, and the performers and their families, are free to use the digital files however they can be useful to you. LisaMarie has access to the high-res originals, or you may contact me directly. All I ask is that you don't sell or give them out, or modify them. If you need edits, color toning, or cropping, just email me and I'd be glad to do those for you.

Concert #5 - February 20, 2009

An Evening of Contemporary Jazz

'Picture This', with Al Teodosio (opener)

and a very special cameo appearance by

the LaStrada Sisters

The Brick Church Music Series concert on February 20 featured the popular contemporary jazz quartet 'Picture This'. The quartet features Jerome Monachino (guitar/voice), Peter Engisch (keys), Matt DeLuca (drums), and Gary Matthews (ac.& el. bass). Al Teodosio, a remarkable young jazz guitarist who is a junior at St. Michaels College, opened the evening. Al Myers of WCS was the emcee.

The concert was a benefit performance for The Connecting Youth Mentoring Program and was hosted by CY Mentoring volunteers. There was also a special cameo performance by some ambassadors for the CY Mentoring program, the singing LaStrada Sisters. Michelle is in grade 8 and Mahoganie in grade 7; both are WCS students hailing from Swift House. Starr is a 6th grader at WCS from Voyager House. They were joined by sisters Annie (in 4th grade) and Arianna (in 2nd grade).

We were also fortunate to have Williston watercolor artist Nancy Stone show her work before the show, and during the intermission. Nancy brought several paintings done from sketches she made at the January Brick Church Concert featuring Pale Fire and Busted Brix.

This gallery includes photos from the rehearsals, July 3 concert at the Flynn, sendoff, and return of the Vermont Youth Orchestra from their second international performance tour. This link to the VYOA website gives more information about the tour, links to the recorded music, and an itinerary for the trip. There is also a wonderful blog from 10 of the travelers with updates and commentary on their progress.

The July 3 concert included presentations from Governor Douglas and the Vermont Arts Council recognizing Troy Peters' legacy of contributions to the VYOA and the arts in Vermont. This was Troy's final concert in Vermont with the VYOA; he leaves to become Music Director of the San Antonio Youth Orchestra following the France tour.

Crash - Oak Hill Road

Single vehicle crash on Oak Hill Road in Williston that occurred on 9/22/09 at about 7:50am. A young national guard soldier was driving North when, according to what he told someone on the scene, he was overcome with nausea and rolled down his window to vomit. He lost control of the vehicle, went into the ditch on the east side of the road, then the vehicle was launched into the air as it encountered the driveway. It flew about 45' before striking two large pine trees about 4' from the ground. Williston Police, Fire, and St. Michaels Rescue were at the scene. I have no information about the driver's injuries; they seemed serious but not life-threatening and he was awake and talking to people clearly shortly after impact. Wish him the best and hope he is OK.

This gallery includes photos cropped specifically to be used as background and accents for business cards in ZAZZLE. I'm not endorsing or recommending Zazzle just yet, although the concept is good. Zazzle can print runs of cards in full bleed, full color both sides in batches of 20 starting around $6.95 before mailing. For large runs, other services like Vistaprint are cheaper per card but Zazzle is inexpensive for small runs and their online tools for making the cards work well. Note they have 9-10 different papers including an 'indestructible' paper like very heavy tyvek that is cool in the 1"x3" size as a novelty bookmark/mini card.
Normal business cards are 2"x3.5"; chubby business cards are 2.5" x 3.5", and skinny business cards are 1" x 3".
I've created some sets with obvious front/back photos with dark field for text; also uploaded some accent photos. More will follow. .. this is just an experiment so far.
